Can Current Milwaukee Bucks Core Compete For Championship? Doc Rivers Speaks Out

Must read

Milwaukee Bucks news: Doc Rivers has been around the block for quite a bit. Throughout his extended tenure as an NBA head coach, the 62-year-old has one championship to show for, which he won with the Boston Celtics many years ago.

This is exactly why the Bucks brought him in. Year 1 did not exactly pan out as planned, but at this point, Coach Doc remains adamant that this team is fully capable of bringing back the Larry O’Brien trophy back to Milwaukee in the near future.

Rivers faced the press for his exit interview on May 3 and naturally, a lot of the questions centered around the Bucks’ failure to win a championship this season. The tenured shot-caller was also asked if he felt that the current nucleus is capable of contending for a title. This is what Rivers had to say:

“Yeah, I think our key guys are key guys,” he said, via Jim Owczarski of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “It’s too early for me to say that around those guys, ‘Do you need change?’ But we didn’t win it, and so there’s always going to be changes, but it’s too early for me right now to evaluate that.”

While Rivers confirmed that his intention is to return in 2024-25 with the same core, he did hint at looming “changes.” This likely means that the team will be very busy this summer in terms of building around Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard.

Depending on where you’re sitting, you could also say that guys like Khris Middleton and Brook Lopez are part of this aforementioned nucleus. Whoever else Coach Doc and the front office consider to be essential members of their core is anybody’s guess at the moment.
