New Delhi: USA Cricket (USAC) on Friday announced its 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024 which has the notable inclusion of Corey Anderson, who played for New Zealand earlier. Anderson played the ODI World Cup (2015) and the T20 World Cup (2014 and 2016) for the Kiwis and will now play the 20-over mega event in June for the USA, co-hosts for the tournament along with the West Indies.

Anderson quit cricket for New Zealand in December 2020 and in 2023, became eligible to represent the United States in international cricket. In March 2024, he was named in the USA side for their home series against Canada.

The squad has the likes of Shayan Jahangir and Ali Khan who hasn’t played a T20I since July 2022. USA recently beat Canada 4-0 in a bilateral series and also making their way from that squad are Gajanand Singh and Usman Rafiq.

Monank Patel is named as the captain while Aaron Jones will act as his deputy in the marquee event, retaining the position from the recent Canada series. Monank was USA’s best batter against Canada with 120 runs in three innings at a strike rate of nearly 170. The likes of Andries Gous, Steven Taylor, Nitish Kumar, Anderson, and Harmeet Singh came good in the Canada series with crucial and handy runs.

Harmeet, Shadley Van Schalkwyk, Noshthush Kenjige, and Saurabh Netravalkar comprise of the USA bowling attack. Talking about Ali Khan, he has experience of playing T20 leagues around the world including CPL, PSL, and the ILT20 but doesn’t have a lot to showcase in the internationals, just 6 T20Is and 15 ODIs. His experience might be the case for the selectors going ahead with him.

Pakistan-born Jahangir began his cricketing journey there and has played 12 ODIs for the USA. Meanwhile, former Delhi batter Milind Kumar, who finished as the top run-scorer in the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy for Sikkim, is also one of the notable picks.

The USA will play their first game of the World Cup (event opener) against Canada on June 1 in Dallas which will be followed by vital matches against Pakistan, India, and Ireland in the league stages.
