New Delhi: As USA Cricket announced its 15-member squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, several former Indian cricketers made their way into the USA team in their bid to contend for the elite World Cup trophy. As many as three cricketers who hail from India will be up against the Indian side – headlined by former Delhi batter and 2018-19 Ranji Trophy top run-getter Milind Kumar.
Milind struck 1331 runs in the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy season and played seven seasons for Delhi before that. He then migrated to the USA in search of better opportunities. The Delhi-born also played for north-eastern states – Sikkim and Tripura in the Indian domestic circuit before shifting to the USA. He played for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as well.
The 33-year-old cricketer finished as the highest run-scorer in the 2018-19 Ranji season playing for Sikkim before making his cricketing debut in the US in 2021. He plied his trade for The Philadelphians in the Minor Cricket League.
Not just Milind, the USA squad for the World Cup has many players who hail from India. For instance, the squad will be led by Gujarat-born Monank Patel in the mega event co-hosted by the USA and the West Indies starting from June 1.
Harmeet, Saurabh in USA squad as well
Ex-Mumbai left-arm spinner Harmeet Singh is also included in the USA squad. The Mumbai-born featured for the Indian team during the 2012 U-19 World Cup, besides playing for Rajasthan Royals in 2013 and state cricket for Tripura. He too debuted in US cricket in 2021, leading the Seattle Thunderbolts in the Minor League Cricket.
Another Mumbai-born, Saurabh Nethravalkar (pacer), played in the 2010 U19 World Cup alongside current stars KL Rahul, Jaydev Unadkat, and Mayank Agarwal. However, renowned Indians and members of the 2012 U-19 World Cup-winning team – Unmukt Chand (captain) and Smit Patel (wk) couldn’t find a spot in the squad.
USA will begin their campaign against Canada in the event opener on June 1 in Dallas. Both teams are part of Group A which also includes India, Pakistan, and Ireland.
