‘I’m Hanging On By A Thread!’ Our Chat With Stars & BFFs Camila Morrone & Suki Waterhouse

Must read

We’re hanging on by a thread!

After spending months together filming Daisy Jones and The Six, there are no secrets left between stars Camila Morrone and Suki Waterhouse. Or are there?

“Oh, there might be a few,” Suki jokes, when ELLE Australia caught up with the pair.

“You have secrets?” Camila quips back. “I’ve told you all of mine already!”

Both women are dressed in impossible chic outfits for our interview, as they have been for their entire vintage-inspired press tour. Camila is wearing a sheer black Philosphy by Lorenzo Serafini dress, while Suki is in a black two piece set (completely with voluminous sleeves) by Dutch designer Ronald van der Kemp.

They’re set to star in Amazon’s hyped adaptation of the novel of the same name. Daisy Jones and The Six charts the rise and sudden fall of a 1970s rock band (loosely inspired by Fleetwood Mac), and all the sex, drugs, and rock ‘n roll mayhem that brings with it.

Suki plays The Six keyboardist Karen Sirko, while Camila plays a character also called Camila, who is the wife of lead singer Billy Dunne. Their characters might not be on tour together, but there’s real moments of connection between the two. You get a sense of these women sticking together to survive in such a male-dominated world, relying on each other to unpack the truth of what’s going on around them.

When asked how they brought this survival instinct and bond to their characters, both women laugh.

“We’re surviving in this world,” Camila says. “Hanging on by a thread and surviving.”
“Yeah, we’re surviving in this world,” Suki agreed with a laugh. “That isn’t difficult.”
Turning to their bond, Suki adds: “That is before turning to their friendship. “That isn’t difficult to bring that kind of bond that we made together,” she continued. “And hopefully had that be a part of what’s on screen, because that’s very real. We became friends, we have lived a little bit of life together, this portion of life together, we’ve definitely got to know everything about each other, and our life stories, and we definitely brought that into the show.”

The strength of their bond is clear in our interview, with Suki and Camila finishing each other’s sentences more frequently than they do their own.

“There’s a sisterhood [in the show], and luckily that wasn’t something we had to force,” Camila says. She turns to Suki: “It would be really awful to have to work with you and secretly hate you. You might secretly hate me, but I don’t hate you.”

“Okay I think we’ve said enough,” Suki says with a laugh. As we said, there’s no secrets between the two.

The fashion of ‘Daisy Jones and The Six’

Lovers of all things 70s fashion will adore Daisy Jones and the Six. Between Suki, Camila and Riley Keough (who stars as the titular Daisy), there’s enough sartorial inspiration to see you through the next dozen 70s-themed parties you go to. Costume designer Denise Wingate used vintage fur, 1920s kimonos, and cowboy boots to create looks that weren’t just true to the time period, but changed as the characters’ circumstances did.

“We have a glow up in the show,” Suki said. “We get rich and famous, no spoilers. So that’s always a fun thing to play.”

“We get very glamorous,” Camila adds.

Karen is very much the sexy but tough rock chick, complete with blonde hair and winged eyeliner; when a music producer advises her to wear low cut blouses, she says “screw you” and wears turtlenecks instead. (“That’s my favourite Karen Sirko moment,” Camila said.)

“I think Karen shies away from wearing dresses and short skirts,” Suki said. “That kind of plays into her character quite a lot, she feels like that necessary in the time period she’s in to be taken seriously, to blend into the boys.”

Wingate was inspired by 1970s rock royalty: Fleetwood Mac’s Christine McView, Patti Smith, Ann and Nancy Wilson from Heart, and Suzi Quatro.

As for Camila — the wife who isn’t always treated that well by her rock star husband — Wingate said it was a very collaborative process with Camila. “We were constantly sending each other pictures of things we saw,” she told Glamour. In the early years, it was turtlenecks and high boots. When they move to Laurel Canyon in LA, Camila’s style became a little more boho with flowy dresses and bare feet. And then in the later years, when she becomes the wife of the biggest rock star in the world, Camila’s style echos Bianca Jagger.

“There’s a couple moments in the show where Cami’s looks are just, whoa, you get to set and you’re like, I’m blown away,” Suki says. “She’s gorgeous.”

“Towards the end [of the show], I was like, well she is the wife of the biggest rock star on earth,” Camila says. “Like, she can come into her own. And we get older as the show goes on, so I think, it’s like, ‘becoming a woman’, becoming a little sexy and a little sophisticated.”

They both point to a later outfit of Camila’s as a particular favourite. “You love that piece of mine in the matching cheetah dress we built,” Camila says to Suki. Then explaining further, she adds: “There was a tie around this beautiful long cheetah gown and we use it as a necktie to copy this BIanca Jagger red sequin dress.”

As for Karen, her style doesn’t exactly change, but her beauty look definitely does.

“My hair gets bigger,” Suki says.

“That’s exactly what happens,” Camila agrees. “Suki stays the same but she gets rich, and her hair gets higher and higher and higher.”
